The sounds of someone speaking inside a closed room behind a metal door are faintly audible; then it slides open, and a man beckons Saffron in. He's not very tall, dressed in a safety orange flight suit, with slightly messy brown hair and a genial face that also has a little bit of permanent worry under it. The room is full of similarly-dressed people, seated and watching the speaker; another man waves Saffron over—this one rather notably handsome, only marred by a fairly significant burn scar across part of his face. She takes the seat next to Handsome Fellow.
As she sits, the man who was speaking addresses the room. "Rogues, Wraiths," he says, "I'd like to introduce you to ████ ██████, newest pilot in Wraith Squadron. She hasn't seen any action yet, but she's already brought down a black-market ring operating on a New Republic training frigate. That's a pretty good start."
The room breaks into applause; Saffron gamely offers a smile to the room, and gives a slightly tired wave. "Thank you," she says, and smiles. "But before anyone feels that his own sideline business is threatened, let me just say that I am susceptible to bribes."
There's laughs all around; another pilot with more exciting-looking rank draws a hand across his brow in mock-relief. The man at the front of the room then waves, and starts getting into the details of the actual briefing—a mission to someplace called Lavisar, where they intend to faux-botch a mission, and then present the local government (under an Empire?) with information indicating that they were set up to be attacked by someone named Zsinj.
When Lavisar's governor is mentioned, and the danger of getting in contact with him, Saffron very abruptly breaks in to note that he likes sunfruit liqueur, and explains (with a little nervousness, after being put on the spot) that when she was working with a logistics company on Coruscant prior to her recruitment, she came across that information which was noted as useful in the event that the company ever made contact with that world again after Coruscant fell to the New Republic. When asked, she says she doesn't have a perfect memory, but just a good memory for facts, trivia, and statistics.
Soon after, the meeting breaks up, with everyone set to their tasks to prep for the mission ahead.
General takeaways: - Saffron has a very good memory for miscellaneous detail and trivia, and remembers what people like - She's a fighter pilot, apparently, under a government known as the New Republic, and a member of "Wraith Squadron" - She used to work for a shipping company processing data before she was recruited - Seems tired and a little nervous, but that tracks
Internal knowledge: - There's a war ongoing between the New Republic and the Empire; Zsinj is a breakaway from the main Imperial faction - She's very proud to have plotted her own course to arrive here, and flew the route herself - The man next to her used to be a really famous child actor slash hottie before he was kidnapped and presumed dead - Everyone has been very kind and friendly to her - She was lying about how she knew about the sunfruit liqueur. - She is in hostile territory and must keep a secret at any cost.
Saffron's dark-haired female bunkmate enters their small shared room, and waves a little piece of plastic. "Mail from home," she says. She asks if her bunkmate would like privacy to watch it—but her bunkmate explains that it's not for her. Her own family is from Toprawa, and "no mail comes off Toprawa"; she indicates that it's for Saffron herself.
Saffron seems a little surprised, but takes the card, saying that she herself doesn't need privacy as it's not like she has any secrets, and loads it up. It turns out to be a holographic transmission of a slightly roguish-looking, black-haired man in a modest room that incongrously has a landscape of blasted, black ground visible through the window. She frowns.
"It's—it's—Tavin Notsil," she says. "My brother."
The roommate: "I thought he was supposed to be—"
The recording quickly answers that question. "I know you must have thought I was dead," says the brother, and explains that he'd also thought she was dead, and that he'd made some "unusual arrangements" with the town constable and was earning an honest living under an assumed name elsewhere when "New Oldtown was hit," which explains the landscape outside.
Her roommate congratulates her, but Saffron doesn't seem pleased. Her brother continues on to say that he'd gotten a response for her application to a job, that hadn't heard of her apparent death, and reads back a section of her original letter. They'd apparently like to hire her, and he suggests that he might be happier there than on Coruscant, where he'd heard she had a job processing data. He glances offscreen, and says he's almost out of time, but that he'd like to hear back from her.
After she collects herself, and her roommate suggests that she might want to talk to the doctor since it's been a shock, she asks to have some time to herself to process it, and heads off at a brisk pace down the corridor.
General Takeaways: - Surname possibly "Notsil"? - Was most recently employed on a world called Coruscant, which seems to be extremely urban. - Thought her entire family was dead; hometown seems to have been destroyed with great prejudice. - Has one brother, alive, who she doesn't seem to like very much, or whose survival seems very unsettling to her.
Internal Knowledge: - She's in all the holos hanging on the wall in the house and she shouldn't be. - This man isn't her brother, and he knows who she really is. - She has no idea how to deal with him and is dreading figuring out how to.
Saffron is sitting at a small table in an area that despite the utilitarian, stark surroundings, is clearly set up to pretend to be a cheerful little café area. Both she and the slightly-older man across from her are wearing casual not-quite-off-duty clothes, and the man has half a face.
Which is to say, the other half of his face is all hard metal cybernetics, no veneer of pretend flesh. A large amount of his body seems to have been replaced with metal prosthetics, in fact, but it doesn't seem to deter him from trying to have a good time; he's clearly a jokester, and good at it, too. He's definitely flirting a little, and Saffron engages him in upbeat chatter the whole time.
There's something about his manner that seems a little downcast, though, even as he keeps up the attitude.
General Takeaways: - This guy was also in her initial briefing (memory 1); he's probably a member of the same squadron - They're either on a smallish space station or a transport or something? It seems like their base since someone has clearly tried to make it livable. - He's got a case that's marked as medical equipment with him, so he's probably (against all odds) the squadron medic.
Internal Knowledge: - This guy has got to be allergic to bacta, which sucks for him, a lot. - He also seems to maybe have some real bad depression. - Being a cyborg is something that often gets pitied but she's really trying hard not to do that since she finds him likable.
Saffron is at home in her relatively unlived-in apartment—it looks like she's barely moved in. Somewhat notably, what look like windows on the walls turn out on closer inspection to be video panels displaying idyllic scenery. She's relaxing, still in work clothes, when the door chimes. When she checks who it is on her buzzer's video feed, she relaxes her posture slightly, and answers the door.
The two men there are very notable in that one is very handsome barring some facial scarring, and one is about 50% metal parts. They introduce themselves as Lt. Face Loran and Flight Officer Ton Phanan from Wraith Squadron, and address her as Lara Notsil, and they're looking for her help. Specifically, they want her to enroll in New Republic flight school... and do kind of shittily, actually, because they need an ingenue to bust a corrupt officer.
At first, she hesitates—Saffron (or Lara?) says that she used to have an interest in learning to pilot, but after—something about her hometown being destroyed, and being held captive by one Admiral Trigit—she'd given up on that, and that she doesn't want to ruin her reputation and only wants to live a quiet life. But after they talk her around a bit, she seems to change her mind and agrees to it.
After she closes the door, she waits for just a little bit, and then, to herself, does a tiny little fistpump. General Takeaways: - Her name is Lara Notsil, apparently, which tracks with her brother's name. - The handsome man, Face Loran, is the one she sat next to in the briefing theater in memory 1. - The cyborg, Ton Phanan, is the man she was talking to in memory 4. - This kind of explains how she got involved in a scheme to bust a smuggling ring. - She was held captive at some point? Her hometown was destroyed?
Internal Knowledge: - Wow it's like they delivered an objective right into her hands. Kickass. - Her name is not Lara Notsil.
Saffron is maybe in her mid-teens, and leaving school; the sky outside is grey and rainy, and leaving the building, she's on a high-up outside sidewalk—or maybe it's better described as a balcony with a railing, extending from a dizzingly-tall building in a city so big it stretches to every horizon. Speeders are waiting outside to pick up children leaving for the day.
She's about to head on her way toward some form of transit when someone calls her name (which is redacted, this time). The person waiting for her is in an official-looking uniform, and she seems to regard them as a stranger.
He explains that she is now a ward of the state, and that in spite of her parents' transgressions, she can expect to be cared for. She is further informed that her belongings have already been moved to her new accommodations, and that she will be coming with him.
Saffron takes this all in with kind of a blank expression, and follows him.
General Takeaways: - She seems to be at school on some kind of city-planet. - She seems used to going home by herself on the local equivalent of public transit. - Flying/levitating vehicles seem to be the norm. - She seems to attend a very nice school. - Her parents are probably indisposed in a bad way.
Internal Knowledge: - This is her home planet. - Her parents are definitely dead and probably were executed. - This person works for the same person her parents worked for, but she hasn't met him before. - She is absolutely boned if she does anything other than what she was told. - How could they do this to her?
